American Heart Month at MKHC

February is American Heart Month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. In particular, hypertension, or high blood pressure, is thought to affect almost 50% of the adult population in the US! Without monitoring and control, hypertension can lead to serious complications. Unfortunately, managing hypertension can be challenging for people without health insurance, putting them at higher risk of negative outcomes. That's why MKHC emphasizes the importance of heart health and helps hundreds of uninsured patients manage their hypertension each year.

Collaboration with the American Heart Association

Our patients have busy lives. We strive to make it as convenient and easy as possible for them to learn about and manage their conditions, which is why we're partnering with the American Heart Association (AHA) to educate patients on hypertension awareness and prevention, healthy lifestyles, and recognition of cardiovascular warning signs.

In addition to health education materials, the AHA has provided 50 free take-home blood pressure monitors for our patients. MKHC has developed a program to allow patients with hypertension or other conditions to check out the blood pressure machines and measure their blood pressure at home. They'll also receive education, support, and regular follow-ups with providers. So far, we've loaned blood pressure monitors to 15 patients, and we hope to expand this success!
